Our Genesis
It's actually quite simple. Prior to 1994, before technology was as common as breathing, and business owners were fashionably labeled entrepreneurs, Rick Carnahan worked at a copy shop that received a rare phone call from a small law firm in Greenville, SC.
The individual had a small stack of legal documents to copy.
No one wanted to tackle the file as it was rather nasty so, Rick, being the newest hire on the crew with the least amount of experience, was given the task to reproduce the client's work.
At that time, Rick's employer didn't realize his bent towards perfectionism, and his eye for detail.
As the project was done, papers were straightened out, oversized were folded neatly, pages were clipped and stapled in a uniform fashion, post-it notes were removed and replaced exactly where they had been originally stuck, and even the rubber band that was haphazardly twisted around the original file was returned to its place of origin—without a single twist.
The job was packaged up and sent out the door.
The following day, Rick's boss received a phone call from the paralegal with the law firm. She wanted to know the name of the individual who copied her file. Thinking the worst, Rick's boss thought his new employee was in trouble as he assumed there was a problem and asked to know the details of her call and complaint. She responded in quite the opposite fashion, with praise for the employee's work and attention to detail; she stated it had been the best work she had ever received in all her previous outsourcing experiences with numerous vendors. In fact, the original file came back looking better than what she sent out the door!
What initially billed out as a $95 dollar job grew quickly into a sizable revenue stream where Rick was given free reign to hire, train, and manage an arm of the business that was strictly focused on legal services. Unbeknownst to him, Rick had been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and several years later on December 21, 1994, Legal Eagle was born.
